JIWA001 - Delly Rollies & Friends 82 / Dea Barandana - Licik pre-order announcement

Those close to me know how long and hard this road has been to come to this. The process of creating JIWA001 and the licensing and producing of this first release. There have been many highs, but also deep lows. Moments where I felt like giving up, but the response and interest from all kinds of people from all different sorts of backgrounds is what kept and keeps me going. So to hold this test pressing in my hands and be able to play a remastered Licik from vinyl is an indescribable feeling. And something that has been a dream since I started Jiwa Jiwa back in 2016.

Jiwa Jiwa is a label and platform, first and foremost, by our people, for our people. But it’s good to see all the interest from outside of the Indonesian archipelago and our diaspora community. It has been called to life to build bridges and connect likeminded souls and spirits (Jiwa Jiwa) around the world.

Through the years Jiwa Jiwa has worked together with big cultural institutions willing to highlight Indonesian culture. Not only from a music cultural perspective but also about ‘placemaking’ and creating a new definition of ‘home’ for ‘our culture’, and showing how varied that can be. Since the more I learn about Indonesia and colonial history, it’s hard to believe Indonesia is one country.

This first release is not only about reissuing one of the most sought-after Indonesian jams. But more a celebration of the quality and sounds the Indonesian archipelago has to offer.

It’s about shining a light on Delly Rollies, whose name takes centre-stage. But also about showing the band behind it, Friends 82. Which is also the reason why I chose to rename the release to Delly Rollies & Friends 82, but more on that later.

Jiwa Jiwa is also about building bridges from generation to generation, and shining a light on what modern-day artists have to offer. That’s why there is a tribute on the B-side by one of Indonesia’s most talented producers and multi-instrumentalists Dea Barandana.

Jiwa Jiwa came to life as a project to discover my roots through music. But it became so much more than that. It became a way to decolonize my mind, our culture and what we can teach now, and for future referencing of some highlights of what Indonesia has to offer.

Jiwa Jiwa is dedicated to our ancestors who have seen and faced many difficulties along the way and this first release is dedicated to my grandparents: Opa Tjalie x & Oma Geertje Sekan. So it is a huge honour to have my Oma hold a physical copy of something that I feel could not have happened without her making the tough choice of fleeing Indonesia in 1962 with her family, and my father.

In the following weeks I will share some stories that led to the discovery of Licik and how this release came about, so keep an eye out and your ears wide open. We’re in for a long ride.

The record is now up for pre-order on bandcamp. And we’re proud to announce that Rush Hour will be taking care of worldwide distribution. For my recordshop friends in Indonesia and around SE-Asia please send an email to sekan@jiwajiwa.com to place your pre-orders.
